CHICAGO (February 17, 2005)—In August, the U.S. Women’s National Team returned to the top of the women’s game with a Gold-medal finish at the 2004 Athens Olympics. But the road to the top of the podium didn’t begin in Athens. It began in Portland, Ore., after a difficult defeat to Germany in the semifinals of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
