Final U.S. Open Cup Third Round Match Complete as Richmond Kickers Cruise Past Ocean City Barons
The third round of the 2005 U.S. Open Cup is finally in the books after the Richmond Kickers (USL 1) and Ocean City Barons (PDL) played their match, originally scheduled for July 13, which had been postponed due to lightning. Ocean City got off to a quick start, as Byron Carmichael notched the game's first goal just four minutes in. Any thoughts of an upset were quickly put to rest as Richmond answered with four goals of their own, including three consecutive strikes by forward McColm Cephas in a15 minute span. In the second half, Ocean City would battle back to pull within one at 4-3, but Richmond kept pouring it on and cruised to a highly entertaining 8-4 win. The 12 goal total sets a modern era (1995-present) record for goals in a U.S. Open Cup match. Expect goals to be harder to come by for the Kickers in their fourth round matchup, as they host D.C. United (MLS), who have surrendered the third fewest goals in the USA's top league.
