2006 U.S. Open Cup Preview: Columbus Crew (MLS) vs. D.C. United (MLS)

Columbus Crew (MLS) at DC United (MLS)
Maryland Soccerplex, Germantown, Maryland
Tuesday, August 1, 7:30 p.m. ET

DC United rolls into the 2006 Open Cup with hopes of a title sweep in both the MLS and the Open Cup. Without a loss in league play since the beginning of May, DC United sits comfortably atop the Eastern standings, 26 points ahead of their Fourth Round opponent, the Columbus Crew. United coach Peter Novak has a plethora of talented strikers to choose from who have scored a total of 10 goals against the Crew in four games this year. United forwards Jaime Moreno and Alecko Eskandarian are finding the back of the net with consistency, scoring 9 and 7 league goals respectively. DC United’s attack does not stop there as midfielders Christian Gomez and Freddy Adu have a combined 8 goals and 13 assists so far this season. Conversely, the Columbus Crew has only notched one win in their last 11 league outings. Adding to their recent struggles, the Crew has not passed the Open Cup Fourth Round since they brought home the Dewar Cup in 2002. Local collegiate stars Jason Garey and Marc Birch make their return to the Maryland area following their 2005 College Cup Title. These players may be able to give the Crew a much needed spark that can ignite them passed DC United and into the Open Cup quarterfinals.
