Former U.S. MNT Manager Bruce Arena Falls to D.C. United;
Semifinal Round Set for September 6
CHICAGO (Aug. 24, 2006) – The 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals wrapped up on Wednesday, Aug. 23, with the Chicago Fire, D.C. United, Houston Dynamo and Los Angeles Galaxy emerging as semifinalists. Houston will square off against the defending champions Los Angeles, while Chicago will host D.C. United. Semifinal winners will vie for the U.S. Open Cup title on Wednesday, Sep. 27.
The semifinalists will face off on Sept. 6, with Houston traveling to The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., for a 7:30 p.m. PT kick off against Los Angeles. D.C. United will travel to the brand new home of the Chicago Fire, Toyota Park, in Bridgeview, Ill. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Former U.S. Men’s National Team Manager Bruce Arena returned to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fray on Wednesday, Aug. 23, only to fall, 3-1, to his former club, D.C. United. Arena traveled to RFK Stadium as head coach of the New York Red Bulls, but his side was unable to contain D.C. on their home turf. United defender Josh Gros opened the scoring in the 37th minute. New York midfielder Amado Guevara countered with a goal in the 41st minute and the teams went into halftime tied, 1-1. In the second half, Jamil Walker scored twice, in the 61st and 84th minutes, to put the hosts up, 3-1.
In Texas, the Houston Dynamo edged FC Dallas, 3-0, at Carl Lewis International Complex on the campus of the University of Houston. Eddie Robinson scored the first goal in the 6th minute. Alejandro Moreno put in the second for Houston in the 57th, followed by Chris Wondolowski wrapped up the scoring in the 61st minute.
Los Angeles defeated the Colorado Rapids, 3-1, in extra time at The Home Depot Center, marking their first win against the Rapids this year. Rapids forward Clint Mathis scored in the third minute to give Colorado the lead, but Quavas Kirk responded for the Galaxy, tying it up at 1-1, which held through the end of regulation. Landon Donovan scored twice in extra time, in the 93rd minute and the 115th minute, to put the Galaxy through to the semifinals with a 3-1 score.
The Chicago Fire advanced to the semifinal round with two goals from Andy Herron, one in the 12th minute and a penalty kick in the 58th. Taylor Twellman scored for New England in the 27th minute and the match ended 2-1.
At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
