The third round of the 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup kicked off on Tuesday, July 1, and proved to be an underdog story. Three MLS teams (Chivas USA, Houston Dynamo, and New York Red Bulls) were eliminated from the competition, and two USL-1 teams (Seattle Sounders and Charleston Battery) and one USL-2 (Crystal Palace Baltimore) advanced to the quarterfinals. Eight teams will compete in the quarterfinal round to take place on July 8.
